Fundraisers

We participate in fundraising for two main reasons:

  1. Scouts are encouraged to fundraise and earn their own way in order to teach them about the value of money and the importance of budgeting. Each scout has a Cookie Jar, a Troop managed savings account, that the scout’s fundraiser earnings go into. This can be used to pay for any scouting associated cost, including the national membership fee, Troop dues, high adventure trips, camping, and even camping/hiking equipment!

  2. We believe scouting should be available to all youth, not just the youth whose parents can afford to pay for their scouting activities. By providing fundraising opportunities, we hope to make scouting accessible to any youth who wants to participate regardless of socio-economic situations.

  • Popcorn Sales

The traditional fundraising program of Scouting America is selling popcorn. Hoosier Trails Council typically sells Trails-End Popcorn every fall. For every dollar of popcorn that scouts sell, 33% of sales goes to the council and 33% goes to the individual scout.

  • Concession Stands

Members of Troop 148 can also earn money by working the home IU basketball game concession stands. You must be 14 to volunteer, but parents can also volunteer on behalf of their scouts. Scouts earn $$ per concession stand shift.

  • Misc. Fundraisers

Sometimes we are participate in optional fundraiser opportunities, such as the Cardinal Spirits hand sanitizer fundraiser during the COVID-19 epidemic, Jellystone Campground’s Annual Haunted Forrest event, and our troop’s traditional Chili Supper fundraiser dinner!

To get a sense of what is needed to cover the cost of scouting, here are the most common costs* associated with our Troop.
