Pamlico Sea Base
In June 2023, 9 scouts and 4 adults traveled to Blounts Creek, North Carolina to spend a week camping and kayaking at Pamlico Sea Base, part of the East Carolina Council of Scouts BSA. The scouts spent the two days of the trip staying in cabins while they got fitted for their sea kayaks, which are longer and skinnier than regular kayaks, and learned proper kayak safety, including how to safely recover and climb back into a flipped kayak. Then they packed up their food in dry bags and drove to a local state park where they loaded up and launched their kayaks. The group kayaked out to Bear Island where they stayed for two nights camping in the sand dunes and enjoying the secluded beach. After kayaking back to the state park, the group visited the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort. The scouts especially enjoyed the Blackbeard exhibit.
Then because the weather was too rough for kayaking, the group took a ferry over to Cape Lookout where they explored the Visitors Center and Cape Lookout Lighthouse before setting up camp and making a fire on the beach. On the ferry ride home the next day, the scouts got to see wild horses running along the coast of Shackleford Banks.
On the way back to Indiana, the group made a pit stop in North Corbin, Kentucky to visit the birthplace of KFC.
Overall, it was a fun, informative, and memorable trip for everyone who went!
