Solar Eclipse Council Camporee
The weekend of April 6-8, 2024, 2 adults and 8 scouts from Troop 148 headed out to Maumee Scout Reservation where we were joined by scouts from across the nation to participate in a one of a kind event…a Solar Eclipse Council Camporee celebrating four minutes of totality during the solar eclipse.
Saturday and Sunday were cool, partially cloudy, with occasional rain. But scouts didn’t let the weather affect their spirits. They spent the days participating in a variety of of eclipse-themed activities, from crafting camera obscuras to capturing Sun prints. Additionally, they participated in a fire-building challenge to test their survival skills and learned solar cooking techniques, as well as enjoying some traditional camping activities, such as hiking in the woods and fishing at the lake.
Monday brought warm, sunny weather and clear blue skies. The perfect backdrop for eclipse day! Early afternoon, scouts gathered with bated breath, donned their eclipse glasses, and turned their gaze skyward! They watched as the moon slowly crossed in front of the sun, and then for four fleeting minutes, time stood still as totality cast its enchanting shadow on the scout camp. It was a mesmerizing and unforgettable event for all who attended!
